①The Shadow of Chocolate
- Child Labour
It’s estimated that 160 million of children are forced to work against their will.
It’s about 1 in 10 children in the world are child labours. (*1)
The outbreak of COVID-19 worsens the situation of child workers.
In general, cacao farmers and workers can not get sufficient income and treated unfairly.

- Environmental Destruction
Following the rising demand for chocolate and other cacao products, forests are cleared up to make cacao plantations.
That fosters animal extinction and the loss of biodiversity.
Moreover, deforestation makes humans encounter unknown diseases such as we experience in the outbreak of COVID-19.
We could expose ourselves to more zoonotic diseases and infectious diseases by destroying native environments.
It can’t miss the water usage of cacao production.
1 kg of cacao beans requires about 10,000 L of water, which is the exclusive amount of water.
In addition, cacao beans travel long distances to their import countries, and that causes further greenhouse gases emissions.

Closing
We can get a chocolate bar at a low price.
However, we need to know that the true cost of chocolate is missing somewhere before we get chocolate.
In many cases, the burden belongs to farmers, producers, and Mother Earth.
We can’t make our loved ones happy with chocolate that is made from the suffering of others.
We can make affirmative choices to make positive changes.
